background: SMEK2 contains a WH1 domain. There are five named isoforms produced by alternative splicing. Mapping of a diet-induced hypercholesterolemia locus (Dihc2) in rats identified SMEK2 as a strong candidate for responsiveness to dietary cholesterol. Function: Regulatory subunit of serine/threonine-protein phosphatase 4 (PP4). May regulate the activity of PPP4C at centrosomal microtubule organizing centers. Subunit: Serine/threonine-protein phosphatase 4 (PP4) occurs in different assemblies of the catalytic and one or more regulatory subunits. Component of the PP4 complex PPP4C-PPP4R2-PPP4R3B. Subcellular Location: Cytoplasm. Cytoskeleton. Centrosome. Nucleus. Note: In interphase localized in the cytoplasm and (with higher levels) the nucleus. During metaphase located in pericentriolar regions. Tissue Specificity: Moderately expressed in tissues and specific brain regions examined. Similarity: Belongs to the SMEK family. Contains 1 WH1 domain.
