background: This gene encodes a leucine-zipper protein that was first defined as a cancer testis antigens. The encoded protein is an RNA binding protein that interacts with the mRNA export receptor nuclear RNA export factor 2. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2016].] Function: Export adapter involved in mRNA nuclear export. Binds mRNA which is thought to be transferred to the NXF1-NXT1 heterodimer for export (TAP/NFX1 pathway). Binds NXF1, enhances its RNA-binding activity and is required for its localization to the nuclear rim. Associates with the TREX complex via its interaction with the TREX components THOC1, THOC5 and DDX39B/UAP56. Capable of complementing knockdown of ALYREF/THOC4 and partially complementing a double ALYREF/UIF knockdown in vivo. Required for the growth of the melanoma cell line MeWo (PubMed:25662211). Subunit: Interacts NXF1, NXF2, THOC1, THOC5, DDX39B/UAP56 and SRRT. Subcellular Location: Nucleus. Cytoplasm. Note=In nuclear speckles. Relocalizes to the cytoplasm during cell division. Tissue Specificity: Expressed specifically in testis. Also expressed in a wide variety of cancer types, but particularly high levels of expression observed in melanoma cells.
